If you ever run into an embarrassing situation that you need to turn net-positive in your favour, go transparent.

Transparency will win you sympathy, particularly by your admission that you did something wrong that brought about the embarrassment.

Much more than this, using the power of transparency will disarm anyone that might benefit from the embarrassment.
